Big50-2017 Startup Spotlight: Cybereason

Cybereason

What they do: Provide a real-time threat-detection platform.

Problem they solve: New types of cyber-threats, especially Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs), aren’t easily combatted by traditional perimeter-based security. They’re hard to detect and nearly impossible to fend off using traditional tools.

Meanwhile, hackers are getting more sophisticated and have automated toolkits and even botnets they can rent to attack or exploit increasingly complex IT environments.

How they solve it: Cybereason’s real-time threat-detection platform automatically detects malicious activity and presents it back to IT in an intuitive way.

Sensors are deployed on endpoints and servers and collect data from across an organization, 24/7 and in real time. Meanwhile, the system relies on Artificial Intelligence, attack model libraries, and behavior detection to better detect both known and unknown threats, while also delivering actionable remediation info to security teams that provide the end-to-end context of an attack campaign.

Since appearing in the Big50-2016, Cybereason has launched two new products: Ransom Free and the Total Endpoint Protection Platform.

RansomFree is free anti-ransomware software that the company says can “detect and stop more than 99 percent of ransomware variants from encrypting files.” RansomFree is also designed to block zero-day ransomware.

The Total Endpoint Protection Platform adds in EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) and antivirus functionality.

According to Sam Curry, chief product officer, “The introduction of the new Cybereason platform furthers the mission of reversing the hacker advantage in the connected, digital world. Over the past year, Cybereason has detected hundreds of thousands of malicious operations in organizations across the globe. Over 60 percent of these detections are attributed to known malware that has bypassed antivirus. AV is failing. We’re leveraging our ability to detect threats and adding NGAV [next-gen antivirus] to enable our customers to automatically block all threat types, not just known bad files.”

Why they’re in the Big 50-2017: Cybereason is two-time Big50 winner! Last year, the startup finished in the top 10 in Big 50 online voting for the Security and Storage group. This year, they’ve secured one of the biggest rounds of funding of any of the startups in this report. Moreover, APTs are becoming an ever-increasing problem for enterprises of all sizes. This is a market sector with a ton of upside, and Cybereason is well positioned to take advantage of the growing awareness of this problem.
