More than half the field eliminated in Challenge #1
We’ve had our hands full here at Startup50 the last few weeks, evaluating 167 startups that entered the Big50-2018 competition and eliminating more than half of them to arrive at our first Big50-2018 Startup Power Ranking.
This first ranking, however, isn’t going to be all that. . . well, ranked.
Below, you’ll find the Big50-2018 Power 55. They are listed in alphabetical order. These startups hit all of their marks in the first challenge (or earned byes due to wins in 2016 and/or 2017). Actual rankings will happen as we get further into the competition.
This first challenge had two purposes:
- To eliminate startups that a) weren’t a great fit for the competition (based on the Startup50 audience and our areas of focus), b) weren’t real startups (too old, actually a subsidiary, really just a side gig, etc.), or c) that couldn’t follow simple directions and/or gave us a very incomplete profiles to evaluate.
- The second purpose for this challenge was to pick a handful of winners. These startups a) have strong fundamentals (funding, team, customers, etc.), b) have identified big trends disrupting more than just their market niche, and c) have identified Q4 goals that align them well with this competition.
We’ve begun reaching out to Challenge 1 winners this past week. A few more of you will be contacted in the next week or two, so if you haven’t heard from us yet, sit tight. There’s still plenty of time.
We’re also posting the new Big50 Watch List. These startups are newer (often just emerging from stealth mode), riskier (to us, anyway, often because Startup50 hasn’t really covered and, thus, isn’t up to speed on their market niche), and/or haven’t provided us with quite enough info to properly evaluate them. . . yet, but which did give us just enough info to convince us to keep an eye on them.
The startups on the Watch List are ones we intend to track, but they need to show us more.
After culling the field, we’re left with 55 startups that are our initial Big50-2018 Power 55 and 18 startups on the Big50 Watch List.
