Boxever Uses Big Data to Personalize Travel

Backed by $7M in funding, startup Boxever wants to convince travel companies to stop treating customers as just a “confirmation number”

Startup: Boxever

What they do: Boxever has developed real-time customer intelligence technology that enables airlines and travel companies to aggregate and analyze online, offline, and offsite customer data to create stronger, more profitable customer relationships.

Headquarters: Dublin, Ireland

CEO: Dave O’Flanagan. Before co-founding Boxever, Dave was Product Development Manager at Datalex.

Founded: 2011  Boxever-Logo-color

Funding: $7 million total: $6M Series A funding led by Polaris Partners, and $1M in Angel funding.

Problem they tackle: Today’s travel customers book through a number of channels — online booking sites, travel agents, over the phone, or via the brand’s website. Customers are often associated with a confirmation number, rather than as individuals. Because a customer’s details can be spread across many channels, a lack of accurate data makes it difficult for travel retailers to get a comprehensive view of a traveler’s patterns, likes and dislikes, and personas — something other retailers rely on heavily to customize experiences.

What I like about them: With so many booking options for travelers, companies do not know their customers as well as in other industries, which is evident in the frequent criticism of the industry for its overall poor customer service. As a cloud-based technology that captures and analyzes clickstream and behavioral data from the largest travel sites in the world, Boxever can provide actionable recommendations to personalize customer interactions in real-time. This allows companies to treat travelers as customers, rather than confirmation numbers.

Customers include: Interail, Air New Zealand, Tigerair

Key Differentiator: Boxever helps travel retailers determine in real-time whether a customer is traveling for business, or on a family vacation. It can factor in individualized details – such as device preference, region, weather, products viewed – and quickly create tailored guest experiences. Boxever essentially combines the capabilities of legacy solutions that collect customer data and puts it into one single view.

Competitive Landscape: Boxever is competing with legacy companies that provide Big Data analytics and customer experience platforms, with an emphasis on travel. Other companies in this space include Teradata, SaleCycle, Qubit, and AgileOne.
