Big50-2017 Startup Spotlight: Happiest Minds Technologies

Happiest Minds

What they do: Provide “Digital Transformation” services for enterprises and technology providers.

Problem they solve: Trying to manage the onslaught of new technologies makes even the most tech-savvy person’s head spin. For many enterprises, they lack the expertise to successfully adopt new technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), and unified communications, on their own.

How they solve it: Happiest Minds represents the wave of corporate outsourcing to India. The startup enables “Digital Transformation for enterprises” by delivering a variety of new technologies as a service, including AI, Big Data analytics, IoT, mobility, cloud, security, and unified communications.

Headquarters: Bangalore, India

CEO: Sashi Kumar, who previously served as Managing Director, CSC India; and Managing Director, SAP India.

Year Founded: 2011

Funding: Happiest Minds is backed by $63M (US) from Ashok Soota, Intel Capital, and JP Morgan.

Competitors include: IBM, Infosys, Accenture, Tata Consultancy Services, and Capgemini.

Why they’re in the Big 50-2017: The wave of outsourcing to India has been underrepresented in past Big50s. We have had plenty of influence from Indian tech hubs, such as Bangalore, but as branch offices of US-based startups, such as Aryaka.

Happiest Minds also did well in Big50 online voting, and they have a strong leadership team.

Finally, Happiest Minds is not only backed by a boatload of VC funding, but they can also stretch that funding much further in Bangalore than Silicon Valley. That said, in June 2017, Happiest Minds acquired the Houston-based OSSCube, which they would have competed against. The acquisition boosts OSSCube’s presence in North America, as well as adding open-source platform expertise.
